As part of
an agreement between the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
and diazinon manufacturers to phase out
and eliminate all residential uses of
the insecticide diazinon, retailers can
no longer sell products, including home,
lawn, and garden products, after
December 31, 2004 that contain this
chemical. It will be illegal for
retailers to sell these products after
that date.
Diazinon
is highly toxic in very tiny amounts. It is
critical to dispose of these products
properly. Don't dump them out, either in
your drains or in a storm drain.
There are
options for retailers to get reimbursed or
properly dispose of diazinon products. These
include:
1. BUY
BACK PROGRAM: Diazinon manufacturers
will repurchase from retailers any unopened,
unused supplies of diazinon outdoor
non-agricultural use products after December
31, 2004. If you have questions or need
additional information, contact your
distributor.
2.
DISPOSAL: Retailers will be responsible
for safe storage and disposal of any
diazinon products not sold or managed under
the Buy Back Program.
3.
Contact the Hazardous Waste facilities
at the Devlin Road Transfer Station in
American Canyon. Businesses can dispose of
diazinon products on Friday or Saturday by
appointment only. There may be a fee for
disposal, depending on the amount of
insecticide that requires disposal. Call
(800) 984-9661 and press the Business option
on the voicemail.
Please do
not dump any insecticide products down any
drain or any storm drain. The EPA guide
provided
here as a PDF will help you find
additional information. For more information
