Water
dirtied from household and industry
use is called sewage or wastewater.
Wastewater contains anything that
goes down a drain, like human waste,
chemicals from household cleaners
and pesticides, pieces of paper,
bits of food, and leftover drinks.
Wastewater is cleaned at a
wastewater treatment plant.
The
Vallejo Sanitation and Flood Control
District treatment plant is designed
so that wastewater is cleaned
through physical, biological and
chemical processes. The resulting
treated water, also known as
effluent, flows through large pipes
to a deep-water outfall in the
Carquinez Strait. During heavy
rains, effluent flows that exceed 30
million gallons per day are blended
with secondary effluent and
discharged to the Carquinez Strait,
with additional secondary treated
flows discharged to the Mare Island
Strait. |
